New futures with Venture Design

Issue No. 1

The future is getting faster and more furious about producing better - do check out our little piece on the agile fish.

Why are we talking about this? Of course, for the cause of venture design. We love to see businesses and creators get more adventurous with more delightful products, services and experiences. We would love to see them experiment a lot more. This habit is great for better futures for everyone - for people, for customers, for business, for creators and ideators.

This is what we want to share with you - fantastic ideas and their productive possibilities. And when we meet one or sight one or get to hear about one, we feel it must be shared with people who love ideas and new ventures, people who love building better products and experiences. Who knows, one might just trigger your next start up or next new adventure.

▪ Get out of the box ▪

Two words. Many futures & adventures in between.

Two words. Many futures & adventures in between.

You might be an entrepreneur growing an exceptional idea or you might not own a business and yet start a movement that changes the world for the better. Being enterprising is trying to build the better, make the amazing, irrespective of your job status. It is a status where you believe that the outsized outcome you seek will attract the resources it needs, and that the flight of your idea is doable. It is inevitable.

Creating more power for creators. Performing Live.

Problem
Virtual events especially ticketed experiences, can be complicated. From scheduling to sign-ups, payment processing, communication and live streaming, there's a lot to manage. For an artiste it's a huge drain on time. Creators and curators have to stitch together various apps + platforms to achieve the solution. Ticketing platforms often are also limited to the Indian geography and miss the overseas Indian diaspora and foreign audience.

Solution
Viveick and Atul (an accomplished performer and techie duo) are solving for this problem with their boot-strapped venture. With their integrated all in one platform for creators to take end to end charge of their online show business. Here, event hosts and their guests can do everything with no apps or additional software downloads required. NYUCT Design Labs is working with the duo to explore scaling this.

▪ The Memo ▪

Are you the agile fish?

Are you the agile fish?

Today the debate isn't as much about whether you as a business are large or small. It is not the big fish that is on the hunt nowadays. Rather it is the agile fish - small, scrappy but bursting with world changing ideas and nascent products that threaten to disrupt industries. And most often succeeding.

Start-up firms and entrepreneurs are booting out of every nook and corner - be it coffee gulping co-working spaces or grungy garages or rented lofts. They are willing and daring to disrupt every business model and “theorycracies” bringing them down like Jenga towers. This is the design of the times that are and the times to come. And as many more drop out tendering their great resignations, this is getting busier. Ideas are fructifying into business and products faster than ever. With hungry venture capital, start-up friendly technology, and support players acting as eager co-pilots.

This means that the world of businesses and calm corporate waters are getting competition faster and more furious. And most times, unknown.

3 very interesting numbers - you need to pay attention to this!

#1

In 2003 it took 51 days to start a company. This was the global average. By 2019 it had fallen precipitously to 19.597 days. A fall by 62%.

#2

Cost of business start-up procedures (% of GNI per capita) which was 104.8% in 2003 has come down to believe it or not, 19.775% in 2019.

#3

Start-up procedures to register a business (number) has fallen from an average of 10.254 globally in 2003 to 6.63 in 2019. A reduction by 35%.

And what is not revealed in the data above is that this will exponentially get faster and more furious as technology makes an exponential difference year on year. And as venture capital gets more and more available and ambitious.

'In short competition is coming faster, starting quicker and doing cheaper.'
Cost of startup

But the agile fish always sees the glass as half full. This is not to be treated as a threat by large companies. In fact, it is a grand opportunity. To be agile and scrappy once again.

To join ranks, go back to creative fundamentals and be what they once started off as. The original batch of small, scrappy start-ups that began their journey with world changing ideas. The only difference being that the glossary and terminologies in the world of ventures then were slightly different. But it was still the creative ideas, bold bets and passionate folks behind it who made their way to become big businesses. And slowed down a bit.

Sharing a plate by design

Sharing a plate by design

Graphic and communication designer Neeraja D hails from a rural province called Dongaon in the state of Maharashtra. Early life on home-grown plantations and rooted wisdom has had a lasting influence on her work as a student in London and then back as a designer in Mumbai.

Through design thinking and research, her cross-cultural investigation into the relationship between farm and table led to an interesting venture experiment. This revolves around communities across the world bonding and digitally connecting around their curiosity about food and food cultures. It is about strangers who share a meal digitally across time zones, across geographies, across cultures but always finding meeting ground or rather table around food.

Place making for a house of nobility

Place making for a house of nobility
During the middle of the first wave and the second the world of travel had come to a halt for many. Life was suddenly and rather rudely contained to bubbles while people were trying to figure out the crisis.

It seemed like the travel and lodging industry had to brace for a period of hibernation. Not only hibernate but also get used to a new template of travel once the world recovered to normalcy. It struck the big and small - airlines, hotels, restaurants.

Place making for a house of nobility Place making for a house of nobility

It was during this period that a few entrepreneurial minded were in the middle of a revivalist project. To painstakingly restore a 123 years old noble mansion on the banks of the Ganges in Haridwar.
